Marine+Werewolf oh my

I recently read When Danger Bites by Heather Long, via NetGalley. Its about Jax a werwolf marine who runs a secret werewolf team and Kat an outsider, a human who gets tasked to find out why Jax's team is so successful. The idea of mushing together a marine and werewolf theme was intriguing so I decided to give it a try, sadly the story was so-so for me. The writing however was very good and easy to follow along to. It was almost like this was an introductory book that the author was trying to set up for a further series that was missing some parts. Maybe you will like it more than I did.

Release Date: May 8th, 2017

Here is my Goodreads review:

"I'm going to start out by saying, the writing was good. I had no trouble following the story line and was actually intrigued by Jax and Kat's relationship. Jax is described as the quintessential, marine, tough, rugged, and knows how to take and give orders. I liked how Kat was described as a tough as nails marine herself, so often the female protagonists are short-sighted in that they are made meek. Usually there is one hunky marine and one damsel in distress, not Kat. That being said if you don't really understand ranking and marine references and lingo in the beginning it takes a second to get used it. Like for me i have no idea how ranks work but was about to follow along easy enough.

What was so-so about this book for me was that Jax and Kat's relationship started strong but I felt it fell flat somewhere along the lines. Since she is coming into a secret marine team of shifters she is naturally suspicious and has her own agenda given to her. There were definite themes of dominance and mating with a bit of "what my wolf wants" that so many wolf-shifter books have. I just felt the story dragged a bit because I put the book down several times to came back and try to finish it. I felt there could have been more development with their relationship but I understand you have to introduce characters, and present a compelling back story for their romance too. It just wasn't enough to keep me from not putting the book down.

In the end this was a well written first book in the series, maybe the others moving on will be more intriguing because the characters and themes have been introduced.

Recommendation: If you like marines, if you like wolf-shifters, this is for you. I'd thought I'd give it a try but I guess both of those things combined were just not as intriguing to me as I originally thought.
